Walking Papers. Dieser Name wird nicht vielen etwas sagen. Mir ginge es jedenfalls so, hätte ich nicht bei einer früheren Tour die virtuelle Bekanntschaft mit dem Sänger Jeff Angell gemacht. Grund dafür war übrigens ein Wettbewerb für Freikarten zu einem Walking-Papers-Konzert in Saarbrücken. Ich hatte zwar zwei Eintritte gewonnen, musste aber feststellen, dass Saarbrücken für einen kurzen Trip unter der Woche doch etwas weit weg ist.
Walking Papers veröffentlichten gerade ihr zweites Album “WP2”. Das Album steht mit beiden Beinen im Rock der Rival Sons, und wird weniger vom Grunge-Sound seiner Heimatstadt Seattle beeinflusst. Sowohl Barret Martin von den Screaming Trees wie auch Duff McKagan waren in den Anfangstagen Mitglieder der Band, sind aber due to other commitments für das neue Album ersetzt worden.

Ich konnte mit Jeff ein Interview per Mail führen. Er entschuldigte sich für die verspätete Antwort: Sorry for the delay, Marcel, I was getting married! Lassen wir gelten. Man heiratet schliesslich nicht alle Tage. Hochzeitlied war übrigens Ray Charles mit “Come Rain or Shine”. Zudem hat Jeff meine Fragen nicht nur beantwortet, sondern auch mein holpriges Englisch wunderbar redigiert. Many, many thanks, Jeff! Deshalb belassen wir das Interview auf Englisch. Is it harder when you come from Seattle and play blues/rock as when you come from LA or Texas ?
Blues is a feeling, I think a person can acquire that feeling just about anywhere. If anything, I would think it would be harder to play the blues, if you were from LA. The sun is always shining there.
A lot of people expect a band from Seattle to have some punk/metal influences.
I have many influences from both genres. I love Black Sabbath, Motörhead, Neurosis, Ministry, Godflesh as well as The Dead Boys, The Sex Pistols, Ramones and The Stooges. You can hear it in Walking Papers, but it is served with some other things that aren’t as predictable, so it’s not as easy to identify.
As it seems, it has never been an option for you to change your sound only the get a little bit more “Seattle approved”?
True. I’m not going to compromise my art to get someone else’s approval. If I did I wouldn’t respect myself and I’d kill my passion for making music.
What matters more, that you can convince people that Walking Papers are a great live band also without Duff or that Walking Papers are losing a good musician and friend with a lot of experience?
Both are important and true. Convincing people that our band is good with new members is more important because my personal friendships are mine alone and I don’t need convincing. The friendship is still intact, we just have different jobs now. His pays better!
Will you only play WP-Songs on tour or also from your other projects ?
People will have to show up to find out. What I can guarantee is: all of the songs will be outstanding.
Is it an advantage that in our times the quality of a live band matters more than their record sales ?
Yes, because music we do, well business, is not something I’m all that fascinated by.
What can someone, who loves rock music but doesn’t know WP expect from your live shows?
Magic, mayhem, intensity and dynamics, delivered with a sense of humor.
